Manchester-based trio GoGo Penguin continue to build anticipation for their forthcoming album Necessary Fictions with the release of their powerful new track, “What We Are and What We Are Meant to Be.”

“This piece came together during a period of deep reflection,” says pianist Chris Illingworth. “It’s about confronting the gap between perception and reality — the stories we tell ourselves versus who we really are. There’s vulnerability in that, but also freedom.”

The accompanying video — directed by long-time collaborators Illingworth and Nick Blacka — expands on the track’s mood through a blend of abstract visuals and urban textures, continuing the album’s visual narrative rooted in Manchester’s architecture and atmosphere.
